Representative species of the protected areas of the interior of the Basque Country.

AZTERTU, in the Basque Country, develops awareness programs aimed at the population to highlight the importance of caring for the environment and to encourage their knowledge and active participation. These initiatives use educational materials that focus on the network of protected areas "Red Natura 2000" that also include information on the representative species of Euskadi. Protected inland areas are considered to be all those that are not part of the coastal zone, and which also include riverbanks.

These illustrations were created as part of the Master's Final Project (TFM) of the Postgraduate Course in Scientific Illustration at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Thanks to the collaboration with the AZTERTU program, these realistic-style images of 17 species from these ecosystems were developed. There were also corrections from tutors such as María Viñas and Carles Puche. These illustrations were later used to design signage for protected areas. Species depicted include:

  • 4 mammals as, the European wildcat (Felis silvestris), the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), the European mink (Mustela lutreola) and the Mediterranean horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus euryale).
  • 8 species of birds as the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), the Eurasian griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), the great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus), the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), the white-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus) and the sand martin (Riparia riparia).
  • 2 amphibian species, the alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris) and the agile frog (Rana dalmatina).
  • un species of fish, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus).
